Why a Doula?

Informational Support

Doulas offers evidence-based information on pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care, helping parents make informed decisions. They guide on birth plans, pain management, and interventions and answer health-related questions. Doulas also educate on labor expectations and newborn care and connect families with further resources like lactation consultants.

Partner Support

Doulas provide support to partners and other support people by offering guidance on how they can be most helpful during the labor and birth process. They help partners understand the stages of labor and what to expect, enabling them to offer meaningful support and encouragement to the birthing person. Doulas also allow partners to take breaks, ensuring they remain rested and able to be fully present when needed. By sharing the responsibility of physical and emotional support, doulas help create a supportive birthing team. Additionally, they reassure partners and support people, addressing their concerns and fears, which contributes to a more positive and calm birthing environment.

Physical Support

Doulas offer hands-on comfort with massage and counter-pressure during labor, assist in finding effective birth positions, and guide breathing and relaxation techniques. They encourage movement to aid labor progression and ensure hydration and nourishment for medicated and unmedicated labor and delivery.

Lowering Risk

Doulas contribute to lowering risks related to obstetric care by providing continuous labor support, which has been linked to reductions in the use of interventions such as cesarean sections and epidurals. Their presence and advocacy ensure that the birthing person's preferences are communicated and respected, potentially leading to fewer unnecessary medical interventions. Doulas offer emotional support and reassurance, reducing stress and anxiety, which can positively affect labor progression and outcomes. By educating and preparing parents for the childbirth process, doulas help them make informed decisions, avoiding procedures that may not align with their birth plan unless medically necessary. Furthermore, their role in promoting effective pain management techniques can lead to a decrease in the request for pharmaceutical pain relief, minimizing the risks associated with such interventions.
